Snacks From Scratch

On Friday, September 29, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) students volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House of Eastern Wisconsin and baked tasty snacks from scratch. The DP students organized this volunteer initiative as one of their Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) projects. Together the students collaborated in making something very special and quite a tasty treat for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. One of the neat aspects of the Ronald McDonald House mission is that every meal (including snacks) are made onsite by volunteers with often donated food and product. That way, families always have the option for a home cooked meal and treats while their child is being treated at nearby hospitals.

When the IB students arrived, they were escorted by Maggie Flint, the Family Meal Program Coordinator for a tour of at the Ronald McDonald House, getting to know more about its mission and the families it serves. Following the tour, the girls were shown to one of the House's beautiful new kitchens where they were left to set up shop. In the kitchen, the cabinets were all neatly labeled so all of the supplies were easily found. The girls had a total of 11 batches of batter to make and bake for the cupcake and brownie treats they were providing. Once the baking was completed, the girls decided to decorate their treats and neatly package them in candy corn plastic wrap.

The most heartwarming moment was when the first family walked up with little children and they were all so excited to receive a freshly baked treat! Our students enjoyed this opportunity so much that they will be returning on February 23 to bake some more!

Special thanks to Ms. Kosiboski for bringing all the eggs and decorative bags, and to each of the DP students that brought a box of mix to bake. A special thank you to Ann Petrie, President and CEO of RMHC Eastern Wisconsin for her leadership of an incredible organization and for partnering with SJA. Ann currently serves on our Development Committee and we appreciate everything that Ann does for the school!
