The SJA Alumnae Association is excited to announce Citlali Mendieta-Ramos, SJA Class of 1997, as the 2017 Alumna of the Year Award recipient. The Alumna of the Year Award recognizes the outstanding contributions of an SJA alumna to her profession and/or community which support the mission of SJA.
Mendieta-Ramos, along with husband Nicolas Ramos, is the owner of Antigua Latin Inspired Kitchen. Mendieta-Ramos opened Antigua more than 10 years ago and has grown the restaurant to include full service offsite catering and cooking classes.
Mendieta-Ramos grew up with the delectable aroma of simmering spices at her dad's restaurant, Rey Sol, on Milwaukee's south side. It became her dream to raise her family the same way. She is a community leader, taking active roles on various board of director positions with the West Allis West Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce, the Better Business Bureau, the Wisconsin Restaurant Association, and the Wisconsin Women's Business Initiative Corporation (WWBIC).
Her award nominator notes that "as an entrepreneur, Citlali is a shining example of what a Hispanic professional can look like. Her resume conveys her many professional accomplishments, but it does not convey the size of her heart and the depth of her profound commitment to our community."
Mendieta-Ramos and her family also consistently support SJA and its students. Their contributions include, but are not limited to, volunteering for Spaghetti with the Sisters and providing catering for many SJA events including the 2017 Auction. Additionally, Mendieta-Ramos was the 2016 Senior Luncheon speaker, sharing her entrepreneurial advice with the graduating Seniors.
Mendieta-Ramos has received numerous awards for her many contributions to the community. She has been recognized by the Milwaukee Business Journal as a 40 under 40 award recipient, been named Restauranteur of the Year, and was West Allis Citizen of the Year. She has been a speaker at national conferences such as Educause, the Special Event Conference, and the Small Business Finance Forum.
Mendieta-Ramos holds a bachelor's degree from UW-Milwaukee in Information Resources, an MBA from Alverno College, and earned the designation of Certified Professional in Catering and Events. She will receive the Alumna of the Year Award during a special ceremony held on Sept. 24 at the 3rd Annual Alumnae Brunch.
