SJA/MSOE Win Stemmy Partnership Award
MILWAUKEE, WI – Nov. 2, 2011, – At the eighth annual sySTEMnow (Strengthening our Youth in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) conference, November 1, 2011, St. Joan Antida High School and Milwaukee School of Engineering were presented with the Stemmy Partnership Award for our collaborative program, HUGE (Helping Urban Girls Engineer) Futures Program. The partnership has grown this year to include three times as many girls enrolled in the second year engineering class compared to last year and has allowed St. Joan Antida High School to build an engineering wing in the school’s second floor.
STEM is a strong focus at St. Joan Antida High School and the school is excited to offer a 5th course in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) suite of courses, namely, Biotechnical Engineering. PLTW is a nationally recognized pre-collegiate engineering program that encourages middle and high school students to consider future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). As a PLTW partner, the high school already offers a series of four courses in engineering.
Joe H. Noworatzky, MSOE alumnus and Corporation member, employed by Johnson Controls, Inc. and a St. Joan Antida High School board member had this to say, ”It was awesome to watch two great institutions receive an award that is going to help fill the pipeline of future engineers. It is all about building the bridge from middle school to high school to the Universities to industry.”
